Help Design & Choose Dave Williams Magic Invitational Card

UPDATE! David Williams has CHOSEN his card and the contest has ENDED! If you want to find out what David Williams Magic Invitational card is, and find out which Insiders WON, go to the comments section below!

Yo,

Now that Magic’s pro tour is more than 10-years old, there are few distinctions rarer and more objective than owning your own Magic card. Less than a dozen pros have a card.

I got my opportunity to create a card back in 1999 when I won the Invitational in Barcelonia using an archaic blue white black Necro deck with Juzam Djinns, Hypnotic Specters and Sinkholes to beat Sturla Bingens high powered Accademy combo deck.

So when Dave Williams instant messaged me to let me know that the voting was about to start for the Magic Invitational, I asked if he planned on attending if he won.

He said that nothing would stop him—AND that if he won, that he wanted to ask the MTGInsider.com community to help him design his card.

Why? Because you backed him up with both high-octane tech and loyal support—including ELECTING HIM to this year’s Magic Invitational for this this last Pro Season where he took 39th at US Nationals and 22nd at Pro Tour Los Angeles despite limited practice time…

Oh, and by the way, having played with him in a money draft in Grand Prix Richmond against 3 level 6 mages and 1 level 5 mage (that is to say, the current Magic World Champ, the current Pro Player of the Year and the dudes who took 3rd and 5th at worlds—all from Japan) and walked away with the win, I can testify that Dave has the edge…

So this might be your best chance EVER to design a REAL Magic card.

All you have to do to submit your card is leave a comment with all of the cards stats (name, casting cost, all abilities and any suggested flavor text).

Now let me give you some guidelines based on my last conversation with Dave on the subject.

1 Here is the order of card color Dave prefers:
1 Black
2 Red
3 White
4 Blue
No Green

(sorry for when I said only white)

2 He wants his card to be a creature—that is a COMBO with Dark Confidant--friend Bob Maher's Invitational card.

3 He wants his card to be a BEATER—remember this is Dave Williams—the REAL king of beatdown. Make sure you design a card that’s going to bulldoze it’s way through the competition—but also try to be more creative than: Cost 1 white, 10/10 trample, first strike, 0: phasing!

Also bear in mind that Dave—and Wizards of the Coast for that matter, may need to alter your card if it’s chosen.

If your card is chosen than we’ll announce your name and get you a signed copy of the card from Dave Williams himself, along with other considerations;-)

Remember, the invitational begins in less than a WEEK…

Post your card NOW…and stay tuned for news, updates and one or two SURPRISES that Dave and I have planned for you this week to say THANK YOU for your SUPPORT, your IDEAS and your VOTES.

Regards,

Mike Long
3-time Magic Team World Champ
Magic Invitational Champ

PS Remember, you’ll be able to watch David Williams represent the MTGInsider.com community next week at the Magic Invitational LIVE next week on Magic Online.

Watch your email and this blog for updates…

You may pay W in addition to its converted mana cost to play STP Knight whenever you could play an instant.

When STP Knight comes into play, remove target creature other than STP Knight from the game. Its controller gains life equal to its power.

I have two ideas. First is a spirit that boosts a weenie deck, and second is an angel that makes a full angel deck easier to play.

There's my idea, it's original to me, but there's so many magic cards out there now, it may be similar to a card I don't recall. As a balance issue, I wasn't sure if my card's ability should say "each creature you control", or "each OTHER creature you control". A trainer can train himself, right? Besides, I wanted him to start out with reasonable power/toughness/casting cost, then become a beater when more convenient for the player. That's the core idea for my card, so if you edit it, don't lose that concept :)

Oh well - YARRGH!!

Creature - Human Knight

Fear (as I'm sure David strikes this into the heart of his opponents when he sits down at the poker table)

Whenever ~this~ attacks, tap all creatures opponent controls. (Forcing them to go all in)
[This ability might be too powerful, so my alternate ability would be: Whenever ~this~ attacks, if it deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a creature, and you put a 1/1 Knight creature token into play. (I won the hand, so I get some of your chips!)]

2/2

I don't have the flavor text writing skills of some, but I'll let you know if I come up with anything good.

Thanks for the opportunity! Good luck at the Invitational!!

This is the idea I had when I initially sent an email a week or two back, I will repost it here. It could be a little scary with Bob, but as the card says, "No risk, no reward."

Audacious Mage 2R
When Audacious Mage comes into play, reveal the top card of your library. If it's a nonland card, Audacious Mage deals 2 damage to target creature or player. If it's a land card, Audacious Mage deals 2 damage to target creature or player and 3 damage to you.

When you look back at the previous Invitational cards, all of them were aimed at card advantage.

But for my first try here, I will focus on getting all three criteria in one go (with correct templating and everything; all those months on You Make the Card should be worth something). While all of my cards are Human Knights (I love medieval fantasy), they could easily be changed.

Gray Knight WB
Creature - Human Knight
Fear.
Whenever Gray Knight deals combat damage, you gain that much life.
2/2

Simple, efficient beater that comes down early, can slip though defenses, and replenishes the life lost to Dark Confidant.

If you want to go a little bit stronger (winning fights against typical Black creatures with low toughness):

Gray Paladin 1WB
Creature - Human Knight
Fear, first strike.
Whenever Gray Paladin deals combat damage, you gain that much life.
2/2

He laughs at Paladin en-Vec.

A card-advantage route would be to combo off Dark Confidant by emulating Ophidian.

Order of Ophidian 1WU
Creature - Human Knight
Whenever Ophidian Knight attacks and isn't blocked, you may reveal the top card of your library and put it into your hand. If you do, you gain life equal to its converted mana cost and Ophidian Knight deals no combat damage this turn.
1/3

But that fails the Beatdown requirement and also put you into a color combination (WUB) that is not exactly overflowing with spot removal (to ensure an unblocked Order).

Updated submission for new guidelines:

Possessive Demon -or- Desperate Demon
2BB
Creature - Demon
Fear, B: Regenerate Possessive Demon
If you have less than half the life of target opponent, you may sacrifice Possessive Demon and put a possession counter on target creature. That creature gets +6/+6, trample, and is black in addition to its color.
2/2

Ok, I know I wrote the wording for my card's ability pretty bad, but you get the basic idea. I'm not sure how the rulings of counters work, but I'm sure WotC knows how to word it correctly and keep the same idea. I thought about making it become a creature-enchantment, but that sounded way too complicated.

Other considerations:

I tried to think up some cool/fitting names, and those were the best I could come up with. Feel free to think a better one, or just give it a sweet-sounding unique name that's not descriptive and then just make it a legendary creature. That would go well with its ability, considering it will be gone when the beatdown is commencing, allowing another one to be cast.

About the requirement for the ability, you could always go with a specific number of life (like 10) instead of half of target opponent. Or you could use both I guess, whichever comes first. There probably won't be much room for flavor text on this card =/

Of course the casting cost, power/toughness, fear, regeneration, and counter bonuses are all subject to balancing at the discretion of Dave and WotC.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to get across my thought process when coming up with this idea. Good luck Dave!

Ok, first of all, I have to comment on some of the cards I have seen here. There have been some good ones, and some that just won't get printed. Things like Kicker, guild mana, graft, etc wont see print because they are block mechanics. They aren't gonna bring back kicker just for an invitational card. Anyways, there have been some very good ideas here, people. I also think you should look at thinks that work with Confidant, but also without him. What about:

Some Dude - WB
Creature - Badass
Fear (or vigilance, or something)
If ~ is revealed from anywhere, you may put it into play.

My thoughts: The vulnerability of so many aggro strategies (mono, BR, WR, GR, etc...) is in over-extension to the board . Once your hand is dumped to the board, a timely mass-removal leaves you topdecking. With a depleted hand, sometimes you flood lands, other times you get screwed, but there are only a few things that will help you improve card quality (particularly in mono red). This is why the top was so powerful. Particularly in combination with shufflers.

If you're playing black, Dark Confidant helps a lot with replinishing your hand, but revealing a couple of Okibas or Ink-Eyes can mean suicide. You can mitigate by lowering your curve as much as possible, but there could still be a few key 5-6 casting cost cards in your deck that could spell your doom.

Anyway, I'm thinking of a card along the following lines:

1) Improve your awareness of the top 1-2 cards of your deck, and allow you to do something with that card besides draw it. This would work well with or without Bob, but with Bob it could greatly reduce the "suicide" factor while providing some other benefit.

2) Remove an on-board permanent for some benefit. This works well with both Bob and as a small foil to mass removal. If there were a way to get a last use if one or more creatures going to the graveyard (ala Blood Witch), makes mass removal less effective.

3) Fit Wizards of the Coast expectations. This includes NOT being redundant with existing cards (i.e., can't just be a better Blood Witch). Fit into the color wheel appropriately. Be broadly useful, but reward expert play. Etc...

So, after all of that, my first attempt at a card design is:

Flux Harvester - R1
Creature - Human Wizard
R:Reveal the top card of your library. You may remove it from the game.
Sacrifice 2 permanents: Choose a card removed from the game by Flux Harvester. Add mana to your mana pool equal to the converted mana cost of that card.
2/2
If you dig deep enough, everything has power

So that's the starting point. I think that the ability costs may be too low, allowing easy abuse. But since it is so easily removed, it might reduce the abuse potential. But it seems like the type of card that has flexible applications and could fit into aggro and combo decks. It could just be used to improve card quality, or as a risky mana accelerator.

Anyway, I'll keep working on refining plus other alternatives.

Penultimate Joker 1BB
Creature - Human Advisor Wizard
Fear
When ~this~ comes into play, you may sacrifice a creature and gain one life.
If you do, reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a copy of that creature and put it into play.
Put all other cards onto the bottom of your library in any order.
3/3

The trick is to play him and sacrifice someone that you only play one copy of. You will then set your entire library up so that Dark Confidant doesn't hurt you. It rewards high level players for being able to remember the exact order of their newly stacked deck. WotC might "fix" the card because it enables combo (make it sac nontoken creature, for example), but I'd see if they'll print it as is.
I imagine this being pretty bent in extended with things like Bob, Aethermage's Touch, and a 1-of that will seal the deal*. Perhaps a mindslicer and an easy sacrifice outlet to the top of your deck; you will have DC and should recover far, far faster than the opponent. You can follow up with a pit dragon-land-wrecking ball to ensure they all get through, or you blow up opp's lands, and maintain hellbent on the pit dragon. 1BB casting cost makes it demand a reasonable investment in black, but lets you branch out to 1/2 other colors, even in standard thanks to the quality of the ravnica duals.

(*Darksteel Col would be great if you weren't running Bob in the deck :))

This is worded very carefully. If it had been "Sac: The next time you would lose life this turn, you may have target opponent lose that much life" it wouldn't have worked as well with Bob, because you don't know what you will turn over with him, unless you have top out. But with this wording, if you flip over a land, you choose to keep him alive, whereas if you flip over a Kokusho, you can hit your opponent with 6 to the dome.

hi gavin verhey, i like the brainbound horror but i don't think he'd be too overpowered if he had some kind of minor sacrifice ability maybe something like B: sacrifice brainbound horror you may spend any other color of mana as black mana this turn.

it'd need to be something minor and rarely or only situationly advantageous to boost the card to be really playable (because if bob were killed you could sac it to continue drawing if they faith fetters'd it or something like that) its a really innovative submission but wizards may not go for it anyway because the creature will probably have to be human (obv not always the case cough longs merfolk cough) and because if it is human it will seem a bit out of flavour with all the other invitational cards coming at max 2 power and max 3 toughness. but it could potentially work i think it would have to be some kind of beast or flying evil demon dragon kind of thing and dave could be controlling it via reigns linked to a mount on his back. nice submission.

No, if you give it some kind of sacrifice ability its too powerful. The idea is that its a scary drawback for a very underpriced creature. Grid Monitor for example.

If you give it a sacrifice ability, then it defeats the drawback. If something problematic happens to it, you just sacrifice it. This way, theres a large tension to making sure that you don't get locked out of your draw step permanently. You could up it to a 6/6 trampler, but I feel that it is best and most even at a 5/5 trampler.

Also, it doesn't matter really what the name of the card is going into the invitational, Wizards always changes that to best reflect the block if the person wins, usually for the better.

BB1 Zombie Rock Star 2/2

If a card or effect makes you reveal Zombie Rock Star, put 2/2 zombie token into play.

All humans have "zombie" in addition to their normal creature type.

All attacking zombies get +1/+1.

Brainbound Horror looks nice, but it isn't broken enough! Remember, if they kill Bob and Fetters/Pillory/etc. it, you basically lose the game.

I'm thinking something like:

Rawr - BB
Creature - ?
Trample, Protection from White
Skip your draw step.
6/6

The "share the pain" of lifeloss ability that several Insiders (including me) have touched on is also a cool idea imo.

Another version of my card with that "mechanic":
Chaos Knight - 1R
Creature - Human Knight
Haste
Whenever you lose life from a card effect, flip a coin. If heads, target player loses life equal to the amount of life lost. If tails, Chaos Knight gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the amount of life lost.
2/1

And another...

Nature Hater - 1BR
Creature - Human Wizard
Whenever your opponent shuffles his or her library, Nature Hater does 3 damage to target creature or player and you lose 1 life.
Whenever you lose life from a card effect, target opponent loses 2 life and Nature Hater deals 1 damage to you.
2/3

Makes chumping (and killing) Bob with STE a real pain for your opponent. If your opponent shuffles their deck, they get Lava Axed. ^_^
(may be a bit overpowered)

And this one combos with both Bob and Terry (Rakdos Augermage)!

Invitational Man - 1RR
Creature - Human Knight
First Strike, Haste
Whenever a card is revealed from anywhere, ~this~ deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
3/1

And my own pet card:

Ponza Dragon 2RR
Creature - Dragon
Flying, Haste
Whenever ~this~ deals combat damage to a player, destroy target land that player controls and ~this~ does 2 damage to you and target creature you control.
Whenever ~this~ is dealt damage, you lose 1 life.
4/4

Not really a combo with Bob, but just a cool card in my opinion.

If the drawback of Brainbound Horror didn't cause tension, I dont think it would be as cool. Yes, it could get Fettered or Pilloried and Bob gets killed and if you don't have a way to kill it (You are black, hopefully you can kill your creature, or better, Mortify the enchantment) you lose. However, that very fact is something that actually teaches players.

If you lose that way once, you learn that you need to be able to figure out what your opponent has. Running it out against, say, Heartbeat doesn't hurt you that much. But if your opponent leads off with some plains, you learn to identify that you cant necessarily run it out and hope for the best.

It teaches as well as beating down. Thats pretty cool in my opinion.

but we want it to be good gavin, reading internet articles can begin to teach people about bluffing and reading your opponent. the sacrifice ability could potentially even be B: sacrifice brainbound horror and it deals 5 dmg to you. that would still punish you for it getting fetters, if you have skip your draw step on it and no way to get rid of it the card immediately becomes unplayable which is obviously not what anyone wants on an invitational card. the card could potentially be a horror but i think the idea of dave riding this huge flying demon/dragon thing would look really cool from an artwork perspective

I had a friend who came up with this one, which I tweaked a little...

(I'm sticking with the name from my last submission!) :)

Poker Knight
Creature - Human Wizard Knight
BR
Fear
Whenever ~this~ deals combat damage to a player, that player sacrifices a permanent.
2/2
"Looks like you're up the river now, pal."

Combos with Bob in the sense that you'll be drawing more cards, and your opponent will be sacrificing permanents (barring a black creature to block - maybe they even have to throw their own Bob under this guy to stem the bleeding). Card advantage is good, I hear...

To me I disagree. I don't think the card should have a way to sacrifice itself. After all, for such a undercosted beater, no risk no reward. However, I am starting to believe that Brainbound Horror would be better at 6/6, or perhaps 6/5, although 5/5 is still probably acceptable.

In any case, I appreciate the feedback.

In any case, Brainbound Horror needs to be larger and cost less. I think BB for a 6/6 is the limit between meh and broken in half. This way, it still takes 4 swings to kill them, but can fight with Dragons and still live.

And if they played a dual land, then unlucky them. >:)

Oh, the BR when it deals damage to them, they sac a permanent thing with fear is too good imo. It's like a one card lock against control if they can't remove it. IMO fear should be replaced with First Strike or something, or it should cost more.

I like Ponza Dragon more in any case, and Ponza Dragon is like the same thing, only less broken...and a Dragon!

Wracking Horror
BB1

Trample

During your upkeep, discard a card or sacrifice Wracking Horror

Discard a card: Wracking Horror gains +1/+1 until end of turn

4/3

NOTE: May need to add to the Discard a card ability "and remove it from the game" if too strong of a card (for reanimator decks).
However, if the card needs beefed up, you can also add to the discard ability "Wracking Horror can not be the target of spells until end of turn" or "Flying" or potentially make it a 5/3

***********************

Wracking Soul Swallower or Rakdos Soul Swallower
Flying
BR3

At the beginning of your upkeep exchange the top card of your library with any
card in your hand. (naturesmojo's suggestion)

If a 2nd Red is paid in the casting cost, Soul Swallower has haste
If a 2nd Black is paid in the casting cost, Soul Swallower has trample

Discard a card: Soul Swallower gains(+1/+1) until end of turn

5/5

NOTE:
I love (naturesmojo's suggestion)
to work with Confidant : At the beginning of your upkeep exchange the top card of your library with a
card in your hand.

As I write this it's the night before we have to submit our card and begin the Invitational. I have been reading over them along with doing some serious testing thanks to Mike and Dave Bass. There were so many cool ideas that I decided to take the concepts from a few. I am submitting:

B1
Fear
If you control a plains it gets +1/+1 and spirit link
2/1

Blake Miller gave me the idea of fear. I like the fact that fear is such a big factor in poker. I loved Jason Tucker's "Kird Ape" concept. With the new dual lands this is a really good way to may a cheap powerful creature. I took both of these ideas and decided that spirit link was the best way to combo with Dark Confidant yet still be competitive. Thank you for all of your submissions. Wizards always works with the winner to compromise on what they want to print and what the winner wants, so I'm sure I'll be using more of your ideas when the negotiations begin. You guys are great.
